Values-Based Coaching: Navigating Life’s Transitions with Purpose

In a world that’s constantly shifting, more and more people are seeking meaning in their work and personal lives. Tara Sutorius, a seasoned coach with Positivist Group, has observed a significant trend in recent years:

“People have really come to this place in their life where they want to be doing more work that is meaningful and connected to their core values,” Tara explains. “I’m finding that clients at all stages of their careers are asking themselves, ‘Is the work I’m doing filling my cup? Is it meaningful?'”

This soul-searching isn’t limited to career concerns. The pandemic blurred the lines between work, home, and personal life, prompting deeper reflection on how we spend our time. Tara notes that this often leads to two outcomes: realizing you’re content where you are but need to find fulfillment outside of work, or deciding it’s time for a career shift.

“Coaching is really geared to be solution-focused,” she says. “A coach is there to help a client by asking powerful questions, holding up a mirror, and helping to reframe situations.

“I got into coaching because I had a coach many years ago when I was moving through a significant transition in my personal and professional life. It allowed me not to spiral when I was going through a really difficult time.”

Without proper support during transitions, people risk getting stuck in their own heads, overthinking, or falling into analysis paralysis. Coaching provides structure, accountability, and a path forward.

“When you work with a coach, you’re often working towards solution-focused outcomes and you’re working towards goals and objectives,” Tara explains. “You’re really turning your dreams into reality.”

But how do you know if you’re ready for coaching? Tara looks for clients who can verbalize their desire for change and are truly prepared to commit. “I’ll always ask somebody, ‘Are you ready to do this?'” she says. “Because it is a commitment. Coaching isn’t just about having a session every two weeks or once a month. It’s always like follow-ups and homework in between if you want to get the most out of it.”

What sets Tara’s approach apart is her focus on core values. “For me, the foundation of my coaching is looking at core values,” she emphasizes. “No matter what shift you’re going through in your life, whether it’s personal or professional, the foundation needs to be there.”

In a world where many are questioning their path and purpose, Tara’s approach to coaching offers a compass. By grounding the journey in core values, she helps clients navigate life’s transitions with greater clarity, purpose, and alignment.

Whether you’re contemplating a career change, seeking to develop in your current role, or simply trying to find balance in a chaotic world, coaching could be the key to unlocking your next chapter.
